The inspiration for Vinylicious Records
“Music is a higher revelation than all wisdom and philosophy” –Ludwig van Beethoven
“Without music, life would be a mistake”. –Friedrich Nietzsche
I was born with music inside me. Music was one of my parts. Like my ribs, my kidneys, my liver, my heart. Like my blood. It was a force already within me when I arrived on the scene. It was a necessity for me – like food or water. – Ray Charles
If you have scrolled all the way down to here to one of Singapore’s most expansive and complete online record stores, you must be a lover not only of Vinyl, but also the magic of music. This is going to be a self-indulgence of the highest order – talking about our motivation for opening a CD Shop in Singapore, our love of Vinyl Records and some of the LPs that moved us in our youth.
As you may have guessed by the quotes we have chosen to open this missive, the era of Vinyl Records is, to us, more than about vinyl records bringing music to the masses – it is a time that raised consciousness, it is an emotional awakening, a motivator and a life giving force.
During the period when Rock Records were shattering conventions and changing the world – Singapore was forging its own identity; we had the merger and the separation, the growth, bilingualism, National Service and more. The magic of Vinyl Records in Singapore, was, we think largely overlooked as we had more mundane things to focus on.
Come 80’s and 90’s when CD Shops in Singapore were a mecca for the young – and the not so young people you could see in the music of Singapore the definite forging of a national identity. One of the defining songs, released in 1984 was “Stand Up For Singapore” – released to celebrate Singapore’s 25th Anniversary of Independence. We are willing to bet that there are still many in Singapore who can remember going to their nearest Record Store (at a time when online Vinyl Record Stores did not exist) to buy the CD, or some may even have looked for it on LP.
Later, by the time Vinyl Records had well and truly disappeared from the Singapore music scene, we saw the great National Day Songs of the 90s and early new century – who can forget “Home” or “Shine on Me” – Still two of our favourite National Day Songs of all time. This era of Singapore music was the advent of an epoch for us. Some people have gone so far as to compare it to the great era of Vinyl –when some of the most iconic rock bands were releasing vinyl singles with a “B” Side – then there were the bands like The Beatles, Hendrix, Rolling Stones, of the rock era that were good enough to release multiple LPs in a single year.
This era very much represents to us the romance of a different time. It might be a bit indulgent, but to us the time of Vinyl Records, or Rock Records, if Vinyl Singles and LPs can be compared to the pioneering spirit of the old west, of the adventurers and the adventurous – this is part of the romance that motivated us to establish Singapore Vinyl Records store – with a slightly different model to the usual CD Shops in Singapore.
We cater not only to Vinyl Records aficionados but as a well stocked CD Shop in Singapore we offer an eclectic range of music, CDs, nostalgic Singapore Vinyl, as well as worldwide collectible Vinyl Records for the discerning.
Whether it is rock records, the classic “big band” vinyl or the joy of shopping for nostalgic vinyl records online in Singapore, we welcome you to our site and bid you a wonderful online shopping experience for music – with CDs, Records, Vinyl and LPs delivery right at your doorsteps – all with highly convenient payment options.
Finally – we would be a little remiss if we do not include a note on why, in our totally unbiased opinion, Vinyl is the only worth while way to own music. To us, it is all about the romance, the tradition and the rituals of playing an album. This is what makes Vinyl Records special – it harks us back to a time of browsing for great music that makes the playing special. At a time when the convenience of the highest quality digital convenience dominates, we love the quality, the experimentation and the listening enjoyment that Vinyl Records offers.
It does not matter if you listen to Rock Records, Big Band Classic Vinyl LPs, Orchestral Greats or the Singles of the Bit Players that are now largely forgotten, we can offer all these and more from one of the best CD Shops in Singapore. Apart from offering a wide range of music that includes indie, soundtrack, dance, classical, pop, world and jazz, we are committed to update you with the latest entertainment news in South East Asia.
After this wallow of self indulgence about opening an Online CD Shop – offering all the great Singapore Vinyl, Classic Vinyl Records and great rock anthems from yesterday and today in what we hope will become Singapore’s best online music store, we would like to close with a quote from -Benjamin Britten that we feel, sums up the very special relationship that we have always had with music of all sorts.
“It is cruel, you know, that music should be so beautiful. It has the beauty of loneliness of pain: of strength and freedom. The beauty of disappointment and never-satisfied love. The cruel beauty of nature and everlasting beauty of monotony”. – Benjamin Britten
if there is anyway that you feel we can improve this online vinyl record emporium, this Singapore based CD Shop – from any Vinyl LPs you think we should be offering, to how we can improve your shopping experience we invite you to deliver your feedback to the Oogie Records team – it will be valued.
